Lil Wayne leads Grammy nominations

San Francisco  - Rapper Lil Wayne topped the Grammy nominations late Wednesday with eight nominations, placing him above Coldplay which garnered seven, and Jay-Z, Ne-Yo and Kanye West who each earned six nods.

Alison Krauss, John Mayer, Robert Plant, Radiohead and Jazmine Sullivan received five nominations each, and Adele, Danger Mouse, Eagles, Lupe Fiasco, George Strait, and T. I. each have four nominations.

"The Grammy Awards process once again has yielded a comprehensive, diverse and eclectic group of excellent nominees across multiple genres," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy.

"This year's nominations are truly reflective of the talented community of artists and creators who represent some of the highest levels of musical excellence."

The nominations were announced for the first time on prime time television as part of a Grammy concert that featured performances by Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, B. B. King, Jon Mayer and the Foo Fighters.

The nominees for Album Of The Year were Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends by Coldplay, Tha Carter III by Lil Wayne, Year Of The Gentleman from Ne-Yo, Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss and In Rainbows by Radiohead.

The nominees for Record Of The Year were Adele's Chasing Pavements, Coldplay's Viva La Vida, Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love, Paper Planes by M. I. A and Please Read The Letter by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss.

Competing for the Best New Artist are Adele, Duffy, The Jonas Brothers, Lady Antebellum and Jazmine Sullivan.

The 51st Annual Grammy Awards will be held on February 8, in Los Angeles. (dpa)
