Mamata Banerjee to visit Nandigram today

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata BanerjeeNandigram, Dec 3: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will visit violence-hit Nandigram today to take stock of the situation.

Earlier, Mamata managed to reach there on October 28 and her supporters alleged that they were fired upon by the followers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Tight security arrangements have been made as according to sources the supporters of Mamata are planning to hold a rally.

Mamata’s visit is taking place a day after West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi visited the village.

Gandhi said that the Buddhadeb Bhattacharya Government should honour the Calcutta High Court order on March 14 police killings here.

The Governor also said that the traumatised people of the village would take some time to normalise, adding, "Normalcy is returning, but not an easy process."

The West Bengal Government had planned to set up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for chemical industries in Nandigram, but had to abort the project as villagers refused to give their farmland for the project.

The row saw violent clashes between residents opposed to the project and the communist supporters as well as police. (ANI)
