Mechanical problem affects Golden Bridge on A9 in Inverness

Mechanical problem affects Golden Bridge on A9 in InvernessA section of A9 was closed for the second evening after engineers said that mechanical problems have affected the installation of Inverness's flagship Golden Bridge.

The massive pedestrian bridge measuring 84m in the Beechwood area of the city was originally set to be completed on Saturday but issues prevented the works from completing work on time and one of the north's busiest road was closed for a second evening. The shiny new crossing will connect multimillion-pound Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) Inverness Campus development with the Raigmore estate, spanning across the A9.

Contractors has to close down a section of the main road in Inverness after mechanical failure on jacks prevented the workers from completing the work on the crossing on time on Saturday. The north and southbound slip roads remained closed throughout yesterday and overnight. The crossing, which will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road over, is a part of one of the most ambitious projects in the Highlands. The project is claimed to be able to attract a new era of investment in the area.

The development on the one side of the main road will include bases for Inverness College UHI, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland's Rural Colleges (SRUC), a GP medical centre and a hotel. The project is expected to attract future investment of more than £100 million, support 6000 jobs over the next 30 years and generate £38m a year for the Highland economy.
