Micronesian islands declare safe areas for sharks
The Micronesian islands have joined several others in declaring special area in the sea allowing sharks to populate without disturbances.
Huge areas of the Pacific Ocean will become a sanctuary for the much feared predators. The number of sharks around the world is declining at great speeds because of over fishing. In Asia, a great number of sharks are caught to cater to the he appetite for shark-fin soup.
The tiny Pacific nation of Palau had declared its territorial waters a shark sanctuary two years ago followed by the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Honduras and Bahamas have indicated their intent of banning shark fishing in their territories.
The Micronesia islands, which include Guam and the Marshall Islands, have said that they will enforce a ban on shark fishing in more than 2 million square miles of their waters.
