NBCUniversal discussing buyback of MSNBC.com with Microsoft
According to some reports, NBCUniversal is involved in serious discussions with software giant, Microsoft for buying back MSNBC. com.
Amy Lynn, director of communications at NBC News only said that, “Discussions are taking place.” NBC News is currently owned by Comcast Corporation. The deal is likely to make sure that MSNBC. com secures real estate on MSN. com just like Fox Sports has a spot on the page.
Some sources closer to the matter have suggested that negotiations between the two companies have advanced to a stage where NBCU parent company Comcast is conducting a due diligence for the deal. The MSNBC network and MSNBC. com were launched as a partnership initiative between NBC and Microsoft in 1996 at a time when the internet was being explored as a new medium for accessing news.
NBC purchased Microsoft’s majority stake in MSNBC in 2005 and owned the MSNBC completely two years later. However, MSNBC. com remained a joint venture between the two companies. It is known as to how the decision will affect the staff of MSNBC. com. The website's president and CEO, Charlie Tillinghast has created a distinct name for himself and might continue to play a key role in shaping the site’s future.
The officials of both, MSNBC. com and NBCU did not offer any comments on the matter.
