Neil Armstrong passes away at the age of 82
Neil Armstrong, the first man to have stepped on the moon, passed away at the age of 82 due to cardio-vascular complications after undergoing heart-bypass surgery in the US on August 25, 2012.
Mr. Armstrong resided in Cincinnati, Ohio with his wife, carol. He was a retired naval aviator when he was selected by the American space agency to be a part of the agency’s astronaut team. He had a years of experience and was to be the first civilian aviator selected by NASA for the prestigious mission to the moon.
His second mission was as a commander of Apollo 11, which was the first craft to land on the moon with humans. He become the first man to step on the moon on July 20, 1969 and his quote, “one small step for man… one giant leap for mankind” made him known across the world.
After his stint in the space, he became a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Cincinnati and continued to teach for eight years. He resigned from his service and lived in Cincinnati since then.
People from around the world including the US president Obama expressed grief and sorrow at the death of this iconic figure.
