New mosquito species may be responsible for rising number of dengue casesHealth officials have raised concerns that the recently detected new species of mosquito, Aedes Albopictus, may be capable of resisting traditional forms of control.

A senior health official in Delhi said that they were studying the new species of the mosquito to determine if it was responsible for the increasing cases of dengue.

Speaking on the topic, the official said, “It may or may not be behind the increased incidence of dengue this year. We are still studying it, and devising a control mechanism.”

Dr. Atul Gogia, senior doctor of internal medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, also said that resistance of dengue-causing mosquitoes to the existing control mechanisms such as sprays and fumes is possible.

A total of 39 new cases of dengue were reported on Tuesday, 37 of which were reported from three municipal corporations while two cases erupted from VVIP areas in the capital. So far this season, the mosquito-borne disease has infected a total of 1,288 people. Of the total 1,288, eleven cases detected from outside the city.

The death toll jumped to three. Most recently, an 11-year-old girl in Nangloi, west Delhi, lost her life to the mosquito-borne disease.

Meanwhile, the BJP-led municipal corporations have accused the Congress-led state government for the increasing cases of dengue. The BJP-led municipal corporations have alleged that the government hasn’t provided the required funds to take preventive measures in unauthorized colonies.
