Nicotine exposure make teenagers depressed adults

Nicotine exposure make teenagers depressed adultsRecent study revealed that exposure to nicotine in teenage increases the probability of becoming depressed adults.

Florida State University Psychology Professor Carlos A Bolaños-Guzmán and colleagues used animal models to study the effects of nicotine exposure early in life.

Researchers found that nicotine induced a depression-like state in adolescent rats which left them less able to feel pleasure and more sensitive to stress in adulthood whereas rats not exposed to nicotine didn’t show such behavior. Anti depressants or more nicotine cured such depression like symptoms.

Researchers believe that as rats have neurobiology is similar to that of humans; nicotine must have same effect on human beings also.

Carlos Bolanos, an FSU Assistant Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience said: "By smoking, some individuals may end up with mood disregulation later in life and therefore they're going to need to continue smoking for them to balance their mood."
