Nintendo to have five games on smartphones

On Friday, Nintendo said in an investor presentation in Japan that the company is looking forward to bring Mario, Luigi and Link on smartphones by 2017. According to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, the company will focus on bringing five games out on smartphones by the end of the following fiscal year. The company's fiscal years run from April 1 to March 31.

He also said that the games would not be mobile ports of titles that are already present. These will be new games designed with the touch interface in mind, he added.

According to him, "You may think it is a small number, but when we aim to make each title a hit, and because we want to thoroughly operate every one of them for a significant amount of time after their releases, this is not a small number at all". Iwata said it should show their dedication to the smart device business.

The company had announced its association with mobile game company DeNA in March; it has ultimately brought its eminent characters and games to platforms outside of its own consoles and handhelds. The company also said that it was looking forward to explore many game types and monetization models. Iwata added that it wouldn't follow models, such as aggressive free-to-play, that would be harmful for the company's brand.

On Friday, Nintendo's presentation also talked about plans to bring together its mobile games under the umbrella account system like its other consoles and handhelds. Nintendo's first mobile game is expected to be out by the end of the year. However, the company hasn't told when it'll be doing this; it also didn't reveal which licenses could be turned into mobile titles.
