No Ban on Blackberry, says Indian Government

The Indian Government has finally ruled out banning Blackberry operations by mobile service providers but said security aspects would be looked into.

“We will discuss the issue in the Telecom Commission. Country's security is of paramount importance”, A. Raja, Telecom Minister said.

The issue of BlackBerry services came to light after Tata Teleservices was denied permission by the Ministry of Home Affairs to launch services due to security concerns.

The Home Ministry had last week expressed concern over the alleged security threat that BlackBerry services offers in absence of a server here, which does not allow for government interception.

Security agencies had said that they should have access to data that are being encrypted by services like BlackBerry on mobile phones and then decrypted when the data reaches its destination.

All value-added services, including BlackBerry, have to get prior approval of the government to ensure that they have lawful operations.

Various mobile phone operators in India are seeking talks with Research in Motion (RIM) to discuss government security concerns.
