Tel Aviv  - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded late Thursday that Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

Israel radio reported that he issued the call during a meeting late Thursday in Tel Aviv with George Mitchell, Mideast special envoy for US President Barack Obama. They talked for more than two hours in the first such meeting since Netanyahu's hardline government took office on March 31.
