Russian paratroops recalled from Kyrgyzstan

Russian paratroops recalled from KyrgyzstanThe Russian Defense Ministry announced on Thursday that Moscow recalled 270 paratroopers sent to protect military bases in Kyrgyzstan during ethnic unrest in June.

Moscow sent in reinforcements to its military bases about 12 miles north of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek in June as ethnic conflicts gripped parts of the country.

It has also been reported that Bishkek declared a state of emergency in the regions of Jalal-Abad and Osh as conflict between the Kyrgyz and Uzbek communities claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands more.

According to reports of Russia's state-run news agency RIA Novosti, Alexander Cherednik, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, said 270 troops were recalled from Kyrgyzstan as the situation there stabilized.

He further added that two paratrooper companies are staying behind at the Kant military base.

Kyrgyzstan received cautious praise for holding a constitutional referendum in June as tensions ease. The measure moves much of the power in Bishkek from the president to a prime minister. (With Inputs from Agencies)
