Obesity Can Adversely Affect Asthma

Obesity is linked to several health related problems. Various studies have shown that obesity increases the risk of asthma. A recent research has shown that obesity also affects the acuteness of this disease. Researchers in America found out that rate of hospitalization for asthma is higher in obese persons as compared to non-obese persons. This shows that asthma control is difficult in obese persons.

Researchers analyzed the data collected from 1,113 asthma patients above 35 years of age in America. The study subjects were asked various questions regarding weight, height, smoking habits, other illnesses, treatment and their asthma-specific quality of life, besides asthma control and asthma-related hospitalizations.

Analysis of data showed that obese people suffering from asthma are nearly five times more likely to be hospitalized as compared to non-obese people. Obese persons were 2.7 times more likely to have poor asthma control, and 4.6 times more likely to have a history of asthma-related hospitalization as compared to non-obese persons.
Study author, David M Mosen of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research at Denver in the US said, "The big finding here is that even after adjusting for risk factors, obese adults were nearly five times more likely to be hospitalized for their asthma."

He added that this study is yet another example of the long-term dangers of obesity, along with heart disease, diabetes, stroke and dementia.
The study concluded that obese persons suffering from asthma need more observation because it is harder to control their asthma. Researchers advised doctors to take special care of obese people with asthma to avoid hospitalization later.
