OPEC oil price rises by nearly two dollars ahead of cartel meeting

OPEC oil price rises by nearly two dollars ahead of cartel meetingVienna - The price for crude oil produced by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) rose by 1.91 dollars Thursday, ahead of the cartel's meeting in Cairo on Saturday where possible further production cuts will be discussed.

One barrel (159 litres) of OPEC crude stood at 47.38 dollars Thursday, up from 45.47 dollars on the previous day, the Vienna-based organization said Friday.

Several OPEC members have voiced their general support for cutting output quotas, after the cartel's basket price dropped by more than 10 dollars since November 24, despite the cartel's decision on that day to cut production by 1.5 million barrels per day.

"They will look at production, but I doubt they will make a decision yet," said Eugen Weinberg, senior commodity analyst at Commerzbank in Frankfurt.

As the last production cut had not been fully implemented yet, Weinberg said, the 13 OPEC members might defer a new reduction until its next regular meeting of oil ministers in Oran, Algerian on December 17. (dpa)
