Parents don’t take chickenpox seriously

The recent study done by researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shown that chickenpox vaccination programes have drastically reduced the occurrence of this disease. This study also raised some concerns regarding chickenpox. Researchers found out that parents don’t take this disease seriously. That’s why a large number of kids are not vaccinated against this disease.

Chicken pox leads to itching bumps on the skin all over the body, scaling off and on, red in colour. The patient is forced to stay in isolation for15 days. Eventually bumps die leaving scars on the body. It should not be treated as mere childhood disease. It can lead to serious ailments like- pneumonia, encephalitisdefine, bacterial infections and bleeding disorders.

The study showed 75% decline in number of chickenpox/ varicella related hospitalizations between 1995 and 2005 and a 74% decline in the disease related deaths, especially in children. Before it chickenpox used to take lives of atleast 50-60 each year. There used to be severe case 10,000 hospitalizations.

Researchers said that the U.S. varicella vaccination program has dramatically reduced varicella incidence and related complications, hospitalizations and deaths.

Chicken pox vaccine decreased the occurrence of this serious disease by 90% in children. Researchers showed concern regarding the fact that all children are not vaccinated against this disease. Researchers stressed on the two shot schedule of vaccination for complete protection against the disease. They added that complete safety against disease can be ensured only after second shot. The first shot provides 85% protection. But it is also a fact that no vaccine ensures complete protection.
