Carles Puyol says goodbye to FC Barcelona

Carles PuyolBarcelona, May 16 - FC Barcelona's veteran captain Carles Puyol Thursday said goodbye to FC Barcelona after 15 years, a decision that had been previously announced March 4.

Puyol held a press conference Thursday where he received words of praise and admiration from his colleagues, ex-colleagues, presidents and ex-presidents, coaches and other figures from the world of football, Xinhua reported.

Puyol said he wanted to recover. "This year with the physical problems I have had I barely played and it is going to be something difficult to do in the future."

The new contract means that Puyol, who will celebrate his 35th birthday in April, will now almost certainly end his career at the club where he has spent his footballing life, reports Xinhua.

Puyol made his first team debut for Barca in the 1999-2000 season after having spent three years previously progressing through the Barca C and B sides.

Barcelona captain Puyol to miss Spain-England friendly Madrid - Barcelona captain Carles Puyol will miss Wednesday's friendly between Spain and England after limping out of Barca's 3-1 home win against Sporting Gijon on Sunday, the Spanish football federation said Monday.

Puyol, 30, suffered a recurrence of the left thigh strain that he originally suffered in a cup match against Espanyol on January 29. He will be out of action for around one week.

Puyol only played against Gijon because both Gerard Pique and Rafa Marquez were suspended.
