According to insiders, Thorpe's lucrative million-dollar television contract was terminated as he had lost interest in his once-promising media career.

Media sources yesterday claimed Thorpe had in recent times become a reluctant participant in the Foxtel relationship as he focuses increasingly on his university study and the years lost to schooling while in the pool.

"Over the last few days there have been a series of press articles published, speculating about my friendship with Daniel Mendes," the five-time Olympic gold medallist said in a statement published Friday.

"In the past, on several separate occasions, I have answered questions about my sexuality openly and honestly with the media ... my situation in this regard has not changed."

Olympian Thorpe turns college student

Melbourne, Sept. 12 : Ian Thorpe, one of the world’s greatest swimmers, has turned college student by studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree at the Macquarie University.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Thorpe, who dropped out of school at 14 to pursue his swimming, has taken up psychology and linguistics at the university.

The new student was at the Macquarie campus yesterday, hanging out in the coffee shop and attending his lectures and tutorials like any other undergraduate.

Dressed in a white shirt and brown shorts, Thorpe had only one star touch.

"You notice him straight away because of his big designer sunglasses," one campus spy said.
