Riesch clinches slalom title as Vonn crashes; win for Aubert

Maria RieschOfterschwang, Germany - Maria Riesch of Germany clinched the women's slalom World Cup title after Lindsey Vonn of the United States crashed out on the second run in Ofterschwang on Saturday.

Vonn, who led the first leg, was on course for a top-place finish when she straddled a gate and fell, leaving Riesch in fifth place to win the discipline's crystal globe.

Sandrine Aubert of France posted a combined time of 1 minute 46.28 seconds to win on the day ahead of Sweden's Frida Hansdotter, 0.43 seconds behind, with Austria's Nicole Hosp third, at 0.82 seconds.

Gold at last for Maria Riesch as others crash Val d'Isere, France  - Maria Riesch got gold at last at a big event when she won the slalom world title on Saturday from sixth place after the first run.

The German Riesch took the gold with the fastest second run in a combined total 1 minute 51.80 seconds. Defending champion Sarka Zahrobska took silver in 1:52.57 minutes and Tanja Poutiainen of Finland was third in 1:52.89 minutes.

Riesch also won because the top three from the first run met disaster.

Riesch with big slalom win - Vonn reclaims World Cup lead

la Molina, Spain  - Maria Riesch of Germany smashed the opposition on Sunday to win a slalom ski race while her second-placed American friend Lindsey Vonn regained the World Cup lead.

Riesch, 24, had the best time in each of the two runs for a combined total of 1 minute 52.98 seconds. It was her first win of the season and seventh overall.

Vonn trailed by a massive 1.48 seconds in second place with 1:54.46 minutes. The third-placed Austrian Kathrin Zettel was almost another second behind on 1:55.34 minutes.

The defending champion Vonn reclaimed the overall World Cup lead with 438 points from eight events. Finland's Tanja Poutiainen, who had ranked first by winning Saturday's giant slalom, has 400 points. Riesch is third with 328 points.
