SC questions UP govt on Varun detention New Delhi, Apr 2 : The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notices to Uttar Pradesh Government and the Pilibhit District Magistrate seeking to know the basis for invoking the National Security Act (NSA) against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi.

Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan sought an explanation for slapping of the NSA against him.

Varun Gandhi had earlier moved the Supreme Court challenging the UP Government's decision to slap the NSA against him.

The Bench headed by Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan will hear the matter.

In his petition, Varun says that the use of NSA against him was an act of political witch hunting by his political opponents.

According to official sources, Varun was moved to avoid a law and order problem in Pilibhit.

On Tuesday, a petition was filed on behalf of Varun in the Allahabad High Court, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA).

"We strongly demand the withdrawal of NSA against Varun Gandhi or we will launch a big movement across the country," VHP President Ashok Singhal told reporters here.

Singhal alleged that the voice of Hindutva was being suppressed.
