One killed in Nandigram following fresh violence

nadigaramKolkata, Aug 7 : One person was killed today in firing between Trinamool Congress-backed Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers in Nandigram.

Meanwhile, the CPI-M has organised a 24-hour shutdown in Nandigram to protest against the killing of their local committee secretary, Niranjan Mondal.

There was fresh violence in Nandigram in East Midnapore District of West Bengal after Mondal was gunned down in an exchange of fire between the CPM and the Trinamool Congress activists at Kendemari of Rajaramchawk area on Wednesday afternoon.

Harkishan Singh Surjeet's funeral to take place today

New Delhi, Aug 3 (ANI): CPI (M) leader, Harkishan Singh SurjeetThe funeral of veteran CPI (M) leader, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, will take place today at the Nigambodh Ghat at 5 p.m.

The funeral procession will start at 3 p.m. His body will be kept at the CPI (M) headquarters and people will be allowed to pay their last respects to the departed leader from 10 a.m.

Surjeet passed away on Friday. He was 92. 

He was admitted at the Metro Hospital in Noida where he was treated for respiratory problems. Earlier, he had slipped into coma.

Karat refuses alliance with UPA after general elections

Prakash KaratNew Delhi, July : Communist Party of India (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat today refused any possibility of any party alliance with the United Progressive Alliance even after general elections due next year.

He said: “It is all over with the Congress. We will not go with the Congress-led UPA even after next polls.”

Karat also made it clear that Bahujan Samaj Party Chief Mayawati was not their prime ministerial candidate for the coming polls.

He said: "Our current relationship with the BSP is an electoral adjustment."
