Pollution will take several lives in Canada

Pollution will take several lives in CanadaThe recent report presented by Ontario Medical Association has shown that that the increasing amount of pollution will take several lives in Canada.

Researchers did a national analysis to asses the impact of smoke on public health. Researchers also claim that increasing pollution will also adversely affect the national economy. Researchers used a model to calculate the number of deaths and health care costs.

The Illness Costs of Air Pollution model includes an examination of airborne pollutants, principally ozone and particulate matter. The report named “No Breathing Room: National Illness Costs of Air Pollution” was presented by Ontario Medical Association.

Researchers analyzed the data collected from this model to calculate the health effects, which were again grouped into 5 categories: premature deaths; hospital admissions, ER visits, doctor's visits and minor illnesses. Similarly economic costs were also grouped into 4 categories.

The report showed that pollution will take life of 21,000 Canadians this year. Similarly national economy will suffer loss of $8-billion due to smog.

Brian Day, president of CMA, said that doctors everyday see affect of pollution on people. He told that air pollution is responsible for 11,000 hospital admissions a year and 92,000 emergency department visits annually. Approximately 620,000 people doctor's office annually for treatment of problems due to air pollution.

Report also said that pollution enhaces problems of respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure in elderly. Report also showed that not only big cities and industrialized areas even rural areas are affected by increasing pollution. Air pollution particles travel downward due to air pressure. The report showed that the hardest-hit regions due to pollution are Ontario and Quebec.
