Zillur Rahman is Bangladesh's president-elect

Bangladesh MapDhaka - Bangladesh's elections authorities on Wednesday announced that senior Awami League leader Zillur Rahman, who ran unopposed, is the country's president-elect.

"As there is no other contender, we declare Zillur Rahman next president of the People's Republic of Bangladesh," Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda announced at the end of deadline for withdrawal of candidature for the race.

Zillur, a 79-year-old Awami League veteran, will replace the outgoing president Iajuddin Ahmed.

Bangladesh says will not allow terrorists to use its land against India

India, Bangladesh Dhaka, Feb. 9 : The newly elected Sheikh Hasina government has reassured India that it will not allow its territory to be used for spreading terror in India.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni told reporters here: "They (terrorists) don''t have any borders, don''t have any religion. They don''t have any nationality, they are terrorists, and, whoever tries to use our territory to harm anyone, we will put a stop to it and be vigilant."

Pranab appeals for sincere action against terrorism

Pranab MukherjeeDhaka, Feb. 9, : External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said that hurdles in the global war against terrorism are created by an unwillingness or a lack of sincerity on part of countries.

"There is no conflict between the regional architecture and within the regional architecture, the bilateral architecture. What is more important is the sincerity to fight against the menace of terrorism," Mukherjee said.

Mukherjee unveils model of cyclone core shelters in Dhaka

Pranab MukherjeeDhaka, Feb. 9 : Visiting Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday unveiled a model of a core shelter that is to be used for survivors in villages in Bangladesh that were struck by ''Cyclone Sidr''.

Speaking on the occasion, Mukherjee recalled visiting some of the cyclone-affected areas in 2007 and the devastating impact it had caused to lives, property and untold sufferings to the people of Bangladesh.

Zillur Rahman set to be Bangladesh's 19th presidentDhaka - Senior Awami League leader Zillur Rahman is set to be the 19th president of Bangladesh as the election authorities Monday validated his lone nomination for the presidential race, officials said.

"We are awaiting the formal declaration," Abdul Shahid, the chief whip of Bangladesh parliament, said after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda, who is the returning officer for the presidential election.

Huda said that Zillur was the only candidate.

India, Bangladesh to sign two agreements

India, Bangladesh to sign two agreementsDhaka, Feb 9: External Affairs Minster Pranab Mukherjee has revealed that India and Bangladesh would be signing two agreements, one on promotion of bilateral trade and the other on investment promotion.

Mukherjee, who reached Dhaka on Monday, is expected to hold discussions with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and with Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Home and Water Resources.

Mukherjee was received at Dhaka Airport by his Bangladeshi counterpart Dr. Dipu Mony and Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty.
