New Delhi, September 4 : An Asian elephant in China is being sent to the Yunnan Wild Animal Park in Kunming city, following a three-year detoxification program to cure his addiction to drugs.

Four-year-old male elephant, Xiguang, became addicted to drugs in March 2005, after eating a banana smeared with heroin.

According to the China Daily, he was among six elephants lured by animal smugglers along the Sino-Myanmar border.

The report reveals that the smugglers used the bananas as bait for the animals, which were being brought into China''s Dehong Autonomous Prefecture of Dai and Jingpo nationalities.

Beijing  - An elephant rescued from smugglers in China has undergone a detoxification programme to cure it of heroin addiction, state media said on Thursday.

The 7-year-old male Asian elephant was scheduled to return to the south-western province of Yunnan this weekend after finishing its three-year rehabilitation programme on the southern island of Hainan, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The elephant, named Xiguang, became addicted after smugglers used heroin-smeared bananas to lure it and five other elephants across the border from Myanmar into Yunnan, the agency said.

Wildlife experts in Hainan gave Xiguang regular injections of methadone at five times the normal human dose, it said.

Singapore - Singapore and China have agreed to jointly build an eco-city near China's northern port city of Tianjin into a model of sustainable development, The Strait Times reported Thursday.

The model city will have an economy based on the sustainable use of resources the two countries agreed in Beijing during the first meeting of the China-Singapore Joint Steering Committee for the Tianjin Eco-city on Wednesday.

The eco-city will be 40 kilometres from Tianjin, an industrial city 150 kilometres north of Beijing. It is the first joint venture between China and Singapore to address growing concerns about pollution and serve as a model for other projects.

New Delhi, September 4 : The archaeology department of China’s Chongqing Municipality have announced the discovery of a tomb made from more than 2,000 blue and white porcelain bowls, which dates back to the Qing Dynasty.

The tomb was found by a team of road workers in E’Ling Street, in the Yuzhong district of Chongqing.

The Chongqing Economic Times quoted archaeologists as saying that this kind of tomb is very rare and had probably been constructed by migrants to the area.
