Mahatma Gandhi’s Charkha goes into oblivion in GorakhpurGorakhpur, Oct. 2 : Charkha, the spinning wheel propagated by Mahatma Gandhi which has been a symbol of freedom movement, has no takers today, with weavers drifting to take to modern methods of weaving yarn.

With automation being the key link in almost all economic activities, weavers in Gorakhpur region, who earlier relied on Charkha for their livelihood, admit that it has no relevance today.

Floods displace thousands in GorakhpurGorakhpur, Sept 26 : Floods have inundated over a dozen villages and displaced thousands in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Water in the Ghagra and Kuano rivers have risen more than a feet-and-a-half since Wednesday, overflowing neighbouring villages in Gorakhpur and Deoria Districts.

River embankments caved in as the gushing water swept the banks, threatening atleast 15 houses in Pavaria village.

Floods leave a trail of disease in Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur, Aug 7 : Floodwaters have started receding in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, but water-borne diseases have started taking a toll.

The floodwaters have cut off hundreds of villages in the region. According to the state authorities, 311 villages have been inundated and around 21 lives have been lost in the floods.

Most of the flood victims anticipate an outbreak of cholera due to the unhygienic conditions.

Security stepped up on the Indo-Nepal border

Army personnel accompanied by sniffer dogs are doing constant patrolling to monitor the movements in the border area.

“The border police came and asked us to inform them if we were troubled in any way by any body. But, as of now I do not have any such problem,” said Manowar, a resident.

Gorakhpur, July 24: Incessant rains have caused flooding in several villages across Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Rising water levels in the Ghaghra and Kuano rivers has flooded the several villages causing massive loss to crops and property.

According to reports, floodwaters have cut off hundreds of villages.

Villagers complain that their villages are inundated for the past one-week and fear an outbreak of water-borne diseases.

"Water is all around us. There is no drinking water, no food and no oil to cook. If the government or the God do not come to our rescue soon, we will all die," said Nikshed, a villager.
