Ahmedabad zoo offers a chance to adopt wild animals and birdsAhmedabad, Nov 6 : The Kamala Nehru Zoological Park in Ahmedabad has offered a chance to its residents to adopt wild animals and birds through a scheme.

The scheme “friends of the zoo”, was launched last year, and invites the locals to adopt an animal against some money, which is utilized by the zoo authorities to feed the animal.

Narendra Modi Gandhinagar, Nov 5 : Gujarat's principal health secretary is down with swine flu and is among several top officials to be quarantined even as Chief Minister Narendra Modi has recovered from it and is getting ready to join office Friday.

Ravi Saxena, principal secretary, health, has tested positive for the H1N1 virus. He has been quarantined at his residence in Ahmedabad. Health commissioner Mukesh Puri has tested negative, but has been isolated as he was in close touch with Saxena.

Diagnosed with Influenza A (H1N1) virus late Thursday following his return from Russia, 60-year-old Modi has shown rapid recovery.

He was declared "completely healthy" by the team of doctors attending on him Tuesday, but has been advised rest until Thursday when his week-long period of "isolation" ends.

The team of doctors attending the BJP leader at his official residence in Gandhinagar said he was responding well to treatment and recovering fast.

Gujarat has reported 40 swine flu deaths so far.

4 held for killing tourist car driver, fleeing with vehicle

Four people, who allegedly murdered a tourist car driver and fled with the vehicle last month were arrested recently.

The police said the accused had called up a tour agent in MIDC on the pretext of hiring a car to Pawagadh in Gujarat. On the way, they strangled the driver at a desolate spot, the police added. They fled with the vehicle and sold it in Uttar Pradesh.

On September 16, the owner of the tourist agency lodged a police complaint. The police tracked down the accused based on their telephone records.

Two of their accomplices are still at large, the police said.

Cadila Healthcare gets USFDA nod for its Topiramate Capsules

Cadila Healthcare, the parent company of the Zydus Cadila group, has finally secured approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Topiramate capsules.

Topiramate drug is indicated as an initial monotherapy in patients 10 years old or older with partial onset or primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

In addition, the drug is also indicated as an adjunctive therapy for adults and pediatric patients aged 2 - 16 with partial onset seizures, or primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and in patients 2 years of age or older with seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

HCC bags EPC contract worth Rs 167 crore

Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), India’s leading engineering and infrastructure development company, has picked an EPC contract worth Rs 167 crore from Gujarat Water Infrastructure Limited (A Government of Gujarat Undertaking) for Pumped Water Supply Scheme.

Under the deal, HCC will construct two reservoirs - one at Kesaria along with pumping station and second at Veeraval and a 62.28 km pipeline connecting these two reservoirs. The project is scheduled to be completed in 18 months.       

Toxic ship Platinum II inspected

Alang (Gujarat), Oct 20 : A three-member investigation team has started inspection of the US ship Platinum II for toxic materials.

The three-member team comprising an official from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Steel Ministry and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) will submit its report by the end of the week.

The team will inspect the ship and determine whether the cargo on board is toxic for environment.

The Platinum II is allegedly loaded with highly dangerous toxic waste but was granted permission to dock earlier this month.

The government''s move has had environmentalists protesting.

This despite the Gujarat government giving a go-ahead for the ship to be dismantled at Alang, the world’s leading ship breaking centre.

Platinum II, a passenger ship, contains hazardous substances such as asbestos and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), environmental group Indian Platform on Ship Breaking (IPSB) has alleged.
