P. S. Rathore seems dubious and termed the court's verdict "disappointing".

150,000 power connections cut off in HaryanaChandigarh, Dec 25 : Over 150,000 power connections have been cut off in Haryana this year, with the state-run power distribution agency launching a massive campaign to pull up defaulters.

"Our officials are keeping a strict watch on theft of power in Haryana," said an official spokesperson of Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN), here Friday.

"This year, till November we have disconnected the power connections of 159,698 defaulting consumers. Besides, a penalty amount of Rs. 51.70 crore (Rs. 517 million) has been recovered from them."

A packet containing Rs. 1.5 million in cash was delivered Aug 13, 2008 at the residence of newly appointed Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Nirmaljit Kaur but investigations later revealed it was meant for another judge.

Riot police protect Rathore's house from candlelight marchers

S P S RathoreChandigarh, Dec 24 : Riot police in full battle gear surrounded the house of former Haryana director general of police S. P. S. Rathore as local citizens took out a candlelight procession to protest the light sentence he had been given for molesting a teenager in 1990.

The marchers were heading towards his house in Panchkula, a town in Haryana about 10 km from here, police said.

Rathore had been sentenced to six months in jail and a fine of Rs. 1,000 for molesting 14-year-old Ruchika Girhotra. He is also alleged to have later hounded her and her family till she commited suicide three years later.

Rathore may not be finding many friends after his conviction by a court here in the molestation case of 14-year-old Ruchika Girhotra 19 years ago, but the police officer enjoyed the patronage of four successive chief ministers despite the serious charges against him.

Even among parties, the Lok Dal (now Indian National Lok Dal - INLD), Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the now defunct Haryana Vikas Party (HVP) governments continued to promote and probably shield Rathore between 1990 and 2002.

The reaction of the National Commission for Women to the six-month jail sentence handed down to former Haryana Police chief S. P. S. Rathore — convicted of sexually molesting Ruchika Girhotra (14) in 1990 — summed up the overall response to the judgment.

A day after the Chandigarh court’s verdict, politicians and women’s groups were outraged that a police officer who’d misused his position to threaten the victim and her family — driving her to suicide in 1993 — had got away “very lightly”.

Rathore (67) was awarded a lighter sentence due to the “prolonged trial” and his age, the Press Trust of India reported. The crime for which he was convicted comes with a maximum punishment of up to two years.

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Chandigarh had Monday held Rathore guilty of molesting 14-year-old Ruchika here Aug 12, 1990 and sentenced him to a six-month prison term. The teen had committed suicide three years after the incident.

P. S. Rathore was convicted and sentenced for the crime.

Rathore was convicted by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court here Monday for molesting Ruchika Girhotra, then a 14-year-old budding tennis player, on Aug 12, 1990, at Panchkula town, 10 km from here.

S P S RathoreChandigarh, Dec 21 : Former Haryana director general of police (DGP) S. P. S. Rathore was Monday sentenced to six months in prison in a 1990 case of molesting 14-year-old budding tennis player Ruchika Girotra who committed suicide three years later.

Rathore was allowed bail by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court special judge J. S. Sidhu immediately after his sentencing.

The former DGP can now appeal before a higher court against the CBI court order.

Power defaulters pay Rs.14.7 crore Chandigarh, Dec 19 : Haryana's power distribution agency, Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN), has recovered arrears totalling Rs. 14.7 crore (Rs. 147 million) from nearly 16,000 power defaulters in the past 15 days, a company official said Saturday.

A DHBVN spokesman said that 142 teams of the agency knocked at the doors of over 26,000 consumers in the last 15 days to recover bill arrears.    

While 5,149 consumers faced electricity disconnection, arrears of were recovered from nearly 16,000 consumers.

The state government has framed a policy 'Excursion Tour of Students' under which students of Classes 9 to 12 in government schools will be taken on a study tour once a year.

"The policy has been framed to provide conducive atmosphere for the all-round growth and development of children through interaction with other children and exposure to new places of interest," Haryana's Education Minister Geeta Bhukkal said here Tuesday.

"We have full belief that our governor will deal with this issue very seriously and appropriately. We have submitted copies of written complaints which we had received from women police officers and apprised him about the whole issue," Chautala told reporters here.

"We strongly demand an independent CBI probe into the Madhuban sex scandal. We have enough to prove that many senior officers of the Haryana police are involved in this scandal. We have lost our trust in the state's police, we want a CBI inquiry," INLD general secretary Ajay Chautala told reporters.
