PPP to withdraw support in Punjab, form its own government

Islamabad, Jan 22 : The Pakistan People's Party is on verge of quitting the Punjab Government in order to form its own government in the province with the help of the PML-Q, leaving main coalition partner PML-N in the lurch.

Sources said the PPP is up for making its own government with the help of the PML-Q and its dissidents by toppling the PML-N led government.

They further said the PPP had also launched efforts to secure support from within PML-N ranks.

The Nation quoted sources as saying that the PPP top leadership has approved a plan that envisages punishing the PML-N by uprooting its government by March 2009.

PML-N warns disqualification of Nawaz, Shahbaz will lead to chaos in PakIslamabad, Jan 21: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has warned against disqualification of its top leadership, saying that neither the people of the country nor the party will accept any controversial judgment handed in by the PCO judges.

"Any controversial decision at this point of time would mean another judicial crisis and chaos in the country, the responsibility of which would lie on the Government," PML-N Central Secretary Information Ahsan Iqbal told reporters here.

Gilani rules out ‘political reasons’ behind Malik-Sharif meet

Islamabad, Jan 21: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that his government did not direct Interior Adviser Rehman Malik to convey the Pakistan People's Party's viewpoint to PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif.

Talking to reporters on Tuesday, Gilani said Malik might have met Sharif for official reasons.

"The adviser did not meet Sharif for political reasons," The Daily Times quoted him, as saying.

To a question about the newly-inducted United States administration, Gilani hoped that President Barack Obama would review the polices of the previous US regime

"Like Pakistanis, Americans voted for change, therefore, change is expected", he said.

However, a sum of just Rs 1.277 million was spent on the trips of the then Prime Minister. Being a technocrat and least interested in politics, he was not keen to pay too many visits to the state.
