Kathmandu, Aug 14: The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and the Nepali Congress (NC) are all set to file their candidacies for the election of the Prime Minister to be held on Friday in the Constituent Assembly.

Although NC, the second largest CA party, has yet to decide on its candidate, the single largest party CPN-M is now prepared to pitch Prachanda to contest for the top executive post, The Rising Nepal reported.

The parties are, nonetheless, voicing for a last ditch effort to strike consensus even till the last moment of candidacy withdrawal scheduled also for Thursday.

“Yes, there will be nomination and we will try to make it unanimous,” Prachanda told reporters when asked about file his candidacy for Prime Minister.

At least 54 prisoners flee after jailbreak in southern Nepal Kathmandu - At least 54 inmates escaped from a prison in south-eastern Nepal after taking two police officers hostage, media reports said Thursday.

The prisoners escaped from Siraha district prison, about 300 kilometres south-east of Kathmandu, Wednesday night, the Kathmandu Post newspaper reported.

The inmates took the officers hostages when they entered the cells to count prisoners, the Post quoted one of the officers, Pannalal Yadav, as saying.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with CPN (UML) General Secretary Jhal Nath Khanal here, Prachanda said, "Things will be finalised today. It will be a government of national consensus."

Speaking at the Reporters Club on Tuesday, K. C said, "Nepali Congress will not join the government. As an opposition party, it will play an active role in constitution-making."
