Invest in education, Kalam tells Nepal

APJ Abdul KalamKathmandu, Nov 18 : Visiting Former Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam today said that investment in education sector was essential for rural development without which achieving the development of Nepal was impossible.

Addressing the 14th convocation ceremony of Kathmandu University in Dhulikhel, Kavre, Dr. Kalam urged the Kathmandu University graduates to pay attention for development of rural areas of Nepal.

Citing the instance of India''s project for developing 6000 villages, he suggested that Nepal should launch similar projects in 4000 villages.

Nepal government intensifies efforts to bring rebels to peace talks

Kathmandu - The Nepalese government has intensified its efforts to bring some 21 armed rebel groups in southern Nepal together for talks aimed at ending two years of violence in the region, media reports said Tuesday.

Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Janardan Sharma met leaders of five armed rebel groups in Saptari district, about 400 kilometres east of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, on Monday, as part of efforts to bring them to formal negotiations, the Kathmandu Post newspaper reported.

The meeting was the second round of informal talks by a minister in the Maoist-led government with armed groups since the beginning of November.

Nepal Constituent Assembly puts final stamp on statute calendarKathmandu, Nov 17 : Nepal Constituent Assembly (CA) has unanimously endorsed the proposed calendar of events, according to which the new constitution will be endorsed by April 2010.

According to Kantipur, the calendar plans to promulgate the new Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal by May 28, 2010, immediately after all Constituent Assembly members sign the final draft and the chairman authenticates it.

The announcement came after the country's powerful constituent assembly adopted a programme of schedules to draft the constitution showing rare signs of cooperation among the political parties on Sunday.

Chairman of the assembly Subash Nembang said the schedule lays out plans spread over 82 weeks leading to the formal promulgation by May 2010.

Prachanda returns home, says India visit was fruitful

Kathmandu, Nov 15 : Nepal Prime Minister Prachanda returned home on Friday after wrapping up his three-day visit to India.

Addressing a press meet at Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) here, Prachanda described his India visit as ''fruitful.''

He said that Indian leaders had expressed a desire to see Nepal''s peace and constitution writing process proceed in an "understanding" manner.

Prachanda was in New Delhi to attend the second summit of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

On the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit, he met his Indian counterpart Dr. Manmohan Singh and requested him to release Maoist cadres, who are languishing in prisons in India.

Chinese military delegation to visit Nepal

Chinese military delegation to visit NepalA high-level delegation of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army is scheduled to Visit Nepal on November 19. The eight-member Chinese delegation will be led by Major-General I. Huzeng.

The Chinese delegation is likely to meet Deputy Prime Minister Bamdev Gautam, Defence Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, and Chief of Nepal Army General Rookmangud Katawal during its 5 day visit programme.  

This move is seen a critical point in Nepal politics as the Maoist Govt. of the Himalayan state is trying to integrate 19,600 Maoist soldiers in Nepal Army.
