India, Nepal discuss security, border management to combat terrorism

New Delhi, Nov 1 : Home Secretaries of India and Nepal discussed a wide range of issues relating to security, border management and cooperation to effectively combat terrorist activities during their two day talks which commenced yesterday.

Broad parameters of checking smuggling of arms, ammunition, drugs and fake currency were also discussed.

The meeting also deliberated on institutionalising the security-related mechanism between the two countries.

New Delhi has assured Kathmandu to help strengthen the Nepal Police and help in setting up of a Nepal Police Academy.

The delegations are led by Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and his Nepalese counterpart Govinda Kusum

Ban Ki-moon seeks UN role in Nepal's peace process Kathmandu - United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon sought a continued UN role in Nepal's peace process, at a meeting with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday, officials said.

Nepalese officials said the talks centred on the integration of former rebel combatants into the national army and a possible extension of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN).

UN Secretary General begins visit to Nepal

Kathmandu - United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu Friday evening for a two-day visit.

During his stay in Nepal, Ban is scheduled to meet Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav and other politicians.

Talks with Nepalese leaders are expected to focus on the UN role in the country's peace process as well as hurdles seen in the integration of former Maoist rebels into the national army.

The UN formally became involve with Nepal's peace process following the signing of a peace accord between the Maoist rebels and the government led by then-prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala.

"The government formed a high-level committee that will make final decisions on the integration of the former rebel fighters, manage and rehabilitate them," government spokesman and minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara said.
