Madrid  - Indian President Pratibha Patil was Tuesday welcomed by Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia after arriving Monday for the first official visit by an Indian head of state to Spain.

The four-day visit was expected to focus on stepping up trade relations, investments, and on the fight against terrorism, diplomats said.

The Spanish royal couple welcomed Patil and her husband Devisingh Ransingh Shekhawat in front of El Pardo palace.

Madrid  - A decade-old plagiarism case could be reopened in Spain against 1989 Nobel Literature Prize winner Camilo Jose Cela, the daily El Pais reported Tuesday.

Because Cela died in 2002, the judicial complaint now targets Jose Manuel Lara, head of the Planeta publishing house who is being accused of helping Cela plagiarize Maria del Carmen Formoso's 1994 novel Carmen, Carmela, Carmina.

Madrid (Spain) , April 20, 2009 : President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil on Monday called for strengthening the forces of peace soon after arriving in Spanish capital Madrid.

Patil, who was received by Spain''s Minister for Science and Innovation, Cristina Garmendia, said she was delighted to be visiting both Spain and Poland, countries with whom India has close relations.

Barcelona - Just like Formula One, the GP2 racing series will also have to make cuts in budgets and personnel this season due to the ongoing global financial crisis, GP2 boss Bruno Michel confirmed to German Press Agency dpa.

The GP2 series, which replaced Formula 3000 in 2005, is in its fifth year with 26 drivers taking part in this season's opening race in Barcelona on May 9.

"At least the teams have very good marketing policies in place," said Michel. "We find ourselves in a healthy position."

Madrid  - Dinara Safina made tennis history for herself and her family when she officially climbed to the world number one position in the women's rankings on Monday.

Safina, 22, is at the top for the first time. Her brother Marat Safin led the men's rankings for nine weeks in 2000, making them the first brother-sister act to be number one in the singles rankings.

Madrid  - Real Madrid kept up the pressure on Spanish leaders Barcelona on Saturday, with a 1-0 win away to lowly Recreativo Huelva.

The tight win leaves in-form Real six points behind Barca, who earlier on Saturday won 1-0 in Getafe.

"We had to win tonight, in order to prevent them (Barcelona) from escaping," said Real goal scorer Marcelo.

Real have won 15 of their last 16 league games thanks to the defensive solidity given to them by coach Juande Ramos, who took over from Bernd Schuster in December.
