Ageing livers made to function as efficiently as young ones

London, Aug 11 : In a breakthrough study, scientists at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University have successfully prevented functional declines in the livers of old mice.

Lead researcher Dr. Ana Maria Cuervo, associate professor in the departments of developmental & molecular biology, medicine and anatomy & structural biology at Einstein, said that the livers of older animals functioned as well in getting rid of damaged protein as they did when the animals were much younger.

For the study, Cuervo created a transgenic mouse model having an extra gene that codes for the receptor that normally declines in number with increasing age.

UK commanders demand more troops to stave off Taliban

They are recommending a rapid reduction in the 4,000 troops in Iraq so that more can go to Afghanistan.

American and British commanders in Afghanistan want an Iraq-style surge “within months” to fend off a Taliban victory before next year’s presidential election there.

Silvio Berlusconi urged to devote more time to music than politics

Silvio-BerlusconiLondon, Aug 11 : Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s song-writing partner, folk singer Mariano Apicella, has asked him to take time off from running the country, so that the former could focus on their new CD of love ballads.

The album, which is a fourth for Berlusconi with Apicella, is expected to be be completed for a Christmas launch.

However, work on it has been going very slowly.

"The disc is still up in the air. The premier told me that he''s having trouble finding the time to finish it with me,” the Telegraph quoted Apicella as saying.

In the worst case witnessed on Saturday, a 150,000-pound Bentley Continental GT spent four hours going around as its two women passengers shopped.

Radovan Karadzic 'was protected by the UK

Radovan Karadzic was protected by the UKLondon, Aug. 11 : Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic who has been indicted for genocide and war crimes, was receiving protection from London, a former Hague Tribunal official has claimed.

According to The Telegraph, a former United Nations political affairs officer in Bosnia and a Hague Tribunal investigator, James Luko, told a Belgrade newspaper that General Angus Ramsay, the former commander of British peace­keepers in Bosnia, was ordered by his superiors in London to leave Karadzic alone just minutes before British troops were to capture him in August 1997.
