Osama Bin LadenLondon - A British policeman who dressed up as Osama bin Laden during a village fete has attracted the wrath of his superiors and is being reported to a complaints commission, police said Wednesday.

Chief Superintendent Colin Terry took part in a village carnival in Grampound, in the south-western region of Cornwall, last Saturday, a few days before the seventh anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the US.

Britain and Italy to push nuclear power, aid and defence issues

Silvio BerlusconiLondon - The leaders of Italy and Britain Wednesday pledged to end the European economies' dependancy on oil by pushing ahead with investment in nuclear power and alternative energy sources.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, in London for talks with Prime Minister Gordon Brown, said Italy had "suffered from the Greens" in its ambitions to use nuclear power and he was determined to "catch up on lost time."

Britain shelves critical report on anti-terrorism intelligence

Washington, Sep 10 : The intelligence and security committee of Britain has shelved a critical report on the conduct of the police and MI5 in the run-up to the July 7 attacks on London for legal reasons.

The Guardian reported that the intelligence and security committee, which consists of senior peers and MPs, was due to have published its report today.

It is understood to relate to communications between MI5 in London and West Yorkshire police.

The committee, known as the ISC, undertook to draw up a report last year after concluding that it was possible the chances of preventing the July 7, 2005 attacks in London “might have been greater had different investigative decisions been taken in 2003-05.”

Vedanta unveils 9.8 billion dollar expansion plan, mostly in India

London, Sept 10 : Vedanta Resources plans to spend 9.8 billion dollars in the near future to achieve its goal of becoming the world’s leading aluminium producer.

According to the Londoan-based Financial Times, the biggest element in the expansion project is a 1.25m tone a year capacity smelter to be built at on a brownfield site at Jharsuguda in Orissa, the state where most of India’s bauxite and coal reserves are located.

That plant will cost 5.65 billion dollars.

A new 325,000 ton capacity smelter at Korba in Chattisgarh will cost two billion dollars. Both projects will be phased over four years. Output will be begin in 2010 and 2011.

Each will be supplied by new build power plants.

Asian skilled workers'' will need 70 `immigration'' points to enter the UK

London, Sept. 10 : New immigration laws in Britain are likely to create many hurdles for skilled workers from other countries, especially for skilled general physicians, midwives and teachers of Asian origin.

They will have to pass a number of points based hurdles before coming to the UK, including speaking English, a job offer paying more than 24,000 pounds a year and a sponsoring employer.

Under the points based system, foreigners need 70 points to enter the UK. Speaking English is worth 10 points while other points come from skill and salary levels. If the job is on the shortage list, it is worth an extra 50 points.
