Unitech gets spectrum for West Bengal circleThe Union Ministry of Communications & Information Technology has provided 4.4 MHz of Spectrum in 1800 MHz GSM band to Unitech Ltd for the West Bengal telecom circle. The company has announced that it would soon start telecom services in the West Bengal Service Area.

The company has already been allotted spectrum in 21 service areas. The telecom arm of real estate major Unitech Ltd, Unitech Wireless is also planning to launch 3G services in near future. State run MTNL has already launched 3G services in national Capital Region.

WB Govt To Beef Up Security In Medical Colleges And Hospitals

It seems that the recent terror attacks in country’s financial capital, Mumbai, have awakened the West Bengal government. The state government has decided to brace up the security arrangements in the city-based medical college and hospitals.

After visiting the SSKM Hospital recently, state Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen held a meeting with senior police officers and health department officials to sketch the security needs. The government has decided to have armed guards to man the wards of some premier city hospitals.

Health officials, on Wednesday, have confirmed a fresh H5N1 virus outbreak in the Darjeeling region of eastern India.

The officials ordered the veterinary and health workers to restart culling operations.

Mr. Surendra Gupta, district magistrate, stated, “We have started culling operations at Rangli Ranglikot area of Darjeeling. This time a total of 7,000 poultry will be culled.”

Hospitals Refuse To Admit Patient With Burn InjuriesKolkata: Before finally getting admission at SSKM Hospital on Tuesday, a 24-year-old woman with 90% burn injuries moved from one hospital to another for over 12 hours.

Ms Lopamudra Mitra, a resident of Dum Dum Cantonment, was found burnt at her house around 6.45 p.m. on Monday.

The victim’s relatives took her to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where she was refused admission and was referred to SSKM Hospital.

When taken to SSKM Hospital, the authorities failed to admit her due to shortage of beds at the hospital’s burn ward.

Bird flu hits poultry business in West BengalSiliguri, Jan 6 : Poultry business has been hit hard due to bird flu in West Bengal.

The spread of deadly H5N1 avian influenza across the state has led to mass culling of birds. The sale and movement of poultry has been prohibited.

Poultry farm owners said that they would be completely ruined if it continues for a long time.

"The bird flu hits us every year and due to this we are suffering heavy loses. We will be completely ruined if it continues like this," said Som, a farm owner.

Nearly 80% polling in Nandigram

Nandigram, West BengalKolkata: Polling to the Nandigram and Sujapur Assembly seats in West Bengal passed off peacefully with both the sections recording an intense turnout of voters at 80 and
78 per cent, respectively.

Polling in some parts continued well after the stipulated hours.

Elaborate security arrangements were seen at each booth, with security personnel frisking voters with metal detectors. Every booth had a video recording facility.
