Trinamool defeats CPM in Bishanpur assembly by poll

Communist Party of India-MarxistKolkata, Mar 1 : Giving a fresh jolt to the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress on Sunday wrested the Bishanpur (West) assembly seat from the Left Front by a huge margin in a byelection.

The bypoll was held on February 26, in which 82 percent voters cast their votes.

Madan Mitra of the Trinamool Congress Secured 85,335 votes and he defeated his CPM rival Iskandar Hossain by 30,395 votes.

Bulb removed from girl’s lung

Doctors at SSKM Hospital removed the intact glass bulb from the stomach of the four year old Pratima Aleymagar successfully.

Had the torch bulb broken inside the girl’s stomach, the glass could have caused immense damage to her organs.

Confirming the development, surgeon Arunabha Sengupta, who operated on the girl said, “Aleymagar underwent a surgery Thursday morning. The width of the bulb was 2 mm and it was struck so tightly inside the left bronchia that the slightest pressure would have led to her death.”

On Feb 16, Aleymagar had swallowed a 2 mm X 1 mm bulb while playing at her residence in Narendrapur town in South 24 Parganas district.

West Bengal to begin culling after reports of bird flu in SiliguriSiliguri (WB), Feb 26: Authorities in West Bengal have said about 5,000 birds would be culled after Siliguri reported cases of H5N1 strain of bird flu virus.

The cases were sent to a testing lab in Bhopal and results were positive. Officials said they would begin culling soon.

"The culling operation will be carried out within a three kilometers radius. We have not yet received information on bird census. Tentatively 5,000 need to be culled," said Kausturi Sengupta, acting Sub Divisional Officer, Siliguri.

New Delhi/Siliguri/Agartala, Feb 26 : External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that the mutiny by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) soldiers was an 'internal matter' of Bangladesh.

"This is the internal matter of a sovereign country. There is a regularly elected government, they are in full command of the situation. They know how to deal with it and they are dealing with it. We wish them all success. It is not our practice to make any comment on the internal matter of any sovereign country including our friendly neighbouring country. So far our border is concerned, it is totally safe and secure," Mukherjee told reporters here on Wednesday.
