River transport in Germany blocked by collision

Berlin, GermanyBerlin- The Moselle River, a waterway used for cargo transport, was closed Tuesday by a head-on collision between two motorized barges near Enkirch, Germany.

No one was hurt when the Dutch barges collided, river police spokesman Achim Bartholome said, but one, loaded with iron ore, was holed and grounded. He said human error was probably involved in the accident.

A decision was due Wednesday on whether to unload the vessels so that they could be towed clear and the river, which flows from France into the Rhine, could be reopened. (dpa)
