Sania, Paes advance in Australian Open

Leander-PaesIndian tennis ace Sania Mirza and Leander Paes have stormed into the next round of Australian Open after winning their respective matches in the women's and men's doubles event respectively at the Melbourne Park on Friday.

The 10th seeded duo of Sania and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain has defeated Swiss-Italian duo Timea Bacsinszky and Tathiana Garbin in straight sets by 7-6(3) 6-3 in the second round to move into the pre-quarterfinal of the women's doubles event.

The Indo-Spanish pair was once trailing by 1-4 in first set but they held their nerves and came back strongly to win the set after it went to tie-breaker. Sania-Pascual will now play against the winners of the match between Melinda Czink and Natalie Grandin and Alisa Kleybanova and Francesca Schiavone.

Paes and Lukas Dlouhy of America, who had won two grand slam titles last year, survived from scare of Australian pair of Sophie Ferguson and Carsten Ball to win the match 7-5 7-5. The Indo- US pair will now face the winners of match between Andrea Hlavackova and Lukasz Kubot vs Carly Gullickson and Bernard Tomic.
