Saurav Ganguly, The First Recipient Of Castrol Asian Cricketer Award

Sourav Ganguly got the prestigious Asian Cricketer of the Year Award at the Castrol Asian Cricket Awards held at Karachi. Sachin Tendulkar was awarded the Asian ODI cricketer of the Year ahead of Mahela Jayawardene.

Gautam Gambhir and Pakistan’s Umar Gul were adjudged the best Asian T20 Players. Yuvraj Singh got special award for hitting six sixes in the ICC T20 World Cup.

Sri Lankan wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara took away the best Test Batsman of the year award while Farveez Maharoof was chosen as the best ODI Bowler. The overall Castrol Asian Bowler of the Year Award was won by Muthiah Muralitharan.

Castrol Asian Wicket Keeper or Fielder of the Year award was bagged by Kamran Akmal.  Hanif got a lifetime achievement award. The Castrol Pakistan Awards for Cricketing Excellence for performances by Pakistani cricketers were given to Shoaib Malik as the Castrol Pakistan Cricketer of the Year. Ahmad Shezad was declared the Castrol Pakistan Junior Cricketer of the Year.

The ceremony was attended by cricketers from several Asian countries participating in the ongoing Asia Cup and legendary Asian cricketers like Wasim Akram, Sanath Jayasurya, Wasim Bari, Asif Iqbal and Zahir Abbas in Karachi. It was hosted by former Pakistani cricketer Rameez Raja in Karachi.

The Castrol Asian Cricket Awards felicitate Asia`s best cricketers on a biennial basis across all three formats of the game – Test cricket, One Dayers and T20 Internationals. This year, the awards were given away for the calendar year 2007.
