Speeding a big mistake for Thai overstayer

Sydney  - A Thai man who had overstayed his visa made a big mistake when he drove his car at 137 kilometres an hour in a Sydney restricted zone shortly after midnight Saturday, police said.

Officers who stopped him for speeding found a stash of cash, casino chips and ecstasy tablets in the vehicle.

On top of the speeding charge, the 27-year-old, who was driving on a learner's licence, was charged with possessing and supplying drugs and dealing in the proceeds of crime.

The car may be confiscated under crime proceeds legislation and immigration officials were alerted that his visa expired in 2007. (dpa)
