Kathmandu, Oct 16 : The seven political parties on Tuesday decided to adjourn till October 28 the special session of interim Parliament, which was convened to decide on the fate of monarchy, apparently to buy time for discussions before the House goes for voting on the proposals.

The alliance took the decision to prorogue the special session after hectic parleys during the week could not defuse the political deadlock over the Maoists’ demand for declaring Nepal as a republic immediately and the Constituent Assembly elections based on proportional representation system.

The session, which had been adjourned for two days, was expected to resume today.

The latest decision allows the parties to buy more time to continue their consultation aimed at resolving the impasse caused by the proposals tabled at the interim Parliament by the Maoists.

The parties had agreed to reach a consensus before the voting on the Maoists demands at the special House session.

The Nepali Congress (NC), the largest party in the parliament had said that it would vote against the Maoists' proposal in the parliament. Due to the lack of NC support, the Maoists would fall short of the mandatory two-third majority.

Meanwhile, top leaders of the alliance are holding negotiations at the Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s official residence in Baluwatar.

Earlier today, top leaders of the four major parties met in Baluwatar to continue their effort to forge an agreement on the stalemate.

After the deadlock persisted, the top leaders of the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist and the People’s Front Nepal agreed on postponement of the special session.

On Monday, the UML registered an amendment proposal at the parliament secretariat urging the government to identify the reason why the country failed to conduct the polls on time and announce a new poll date.

The UML has also urged the government to take immediate and concrete steps to announce new poll date. (ANI)
