Study Discovers Gene That Regulates Ovulation

The latest research done by Canadian and European researchers can help many childless couples .The researchers have discovered a gene that regulates ovulation; a gene known as  LRH1 that has ability to both regulate and block ovulation. This discovery could be useful in arenas of infertility treatment on one hand while on the other hand it could be used to produce safer contraceptives.

Under this study, a genetically engineered mouse that had its LRH1 gene blocked was mated with female mice. The female mice didn’t get pregnant, hence this proved that by blocking LRH1, ovulation can be stopped.

The researchers explained that this gene performs many functions like hormone balance, the preparation of the egg for ovulation, and the actual rupture of the ovarian follicle that releases the egg.

Bruce Murphy, the director of the animal research centre at the University de Montreal said, "A pharmaceutical could be developed to target this particular protein and either turn it on or turn it off. Turn it on to enhance fertility and turn it off if you want contraception."
