Swedish ‘Superstar Doctor’ Kicked out of job For Lying about his achievements

“Superstar doctor” Paolo Macchiarini has been kicked out of his job by Sweden's prestigious Karolinska Institute (KI) for allegedly lying about his scientific achievements and other misconduct that is incompatible with KI's employment standards.

A trachea surgeon, Macchiarini had brought about a revolution in the field of artificial windpipe operations. But his career started seeing a downfall in June 2014 when allegations of his misconduct, including his purported exaggeration of the success of his artificial trachea surgeries in numerous scientific publications, gained prominence.

“His conduct has seriously damaged confidence in KI and for research in general”, says KI’s HR manager Mats Engelbrektson in an announcement released on Wednesday.

Engelbrektson says the doctor has committed acts that have led to “tragic effects” for the affected persons and their families. As such, the HR manager informed that the institution will no longer have any dealings with Macchiarini, who will soon be relieved of his duties as a researcher and will be informed that his contract has been revoked.

Karolinska Institute, in a press statement, has listed many reasons for its decision to terminate Macchiarini’s services. The main among these reasons are failure to truthfully disclose his extra-occupational activities, supplication of false data in his curriculum vitae submitted to the institution, demonstration of scientific negligence and breach and damage of KI’s principal values and reputation through his work at Kuban State Medical University, where he worked as a surgeon.

The public announcement by KI about his termination notwithstanding, Machiarrini appears to be adamant on not giving it up without a fight. “I do not accept any of the findings of the Disciplinary Board. I have directed my lawyers who will be doing prompt actions to bring back my reputation”, he says.
