Washington  - In a landmark ruling Friday, US President Barack Obama's administration found that greenhouse gases threaten US air quality and public health, setting the stage for new limits on industry emissions that cause global warming.

The so-called "endangerment finding" by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had long been anticipated by environmental groups and marks the latest shift on US climate policy since Obama took office in January.

San Francisco  - Actor Ashton Kutcher has won the great Twitter popularity contest, becoming the first contributor to the cult microblogging site to amass one million followers.

Kutcher passed the milestone early Friday morning, just half an hour before CNN reached the same mark. The two leading Twitter contributors had been in a race to pass the 1-million mark, with the winner donating 10,000 mosquito bed nets to charity for World Malaria Day later this month.

Kutcher celebrated the victory in an online video feed with his actress wife Demi Moore.

Ramallah  - President Barack Obama is committed to the establishment of a sovereign, independent Palestinian state and regards this as a "national interest" of the US, his envoy said Friday in Ramallah.

"This conflict has gone on for far too long. The people of this region should no longer have to wait for the just peace," George Mitchell told reporters, as he wrapped up his first visit to the region since the formation of a new Israeli government that has refused to openly endorse a two-state solution to the conflict.
