Washington, April 28 : Physicists are using the phenomenon dubbed as `spooky action' to distinguish between two similar quantum devices.

`Quantum ghosts' are far distant particles that can somehow `talk' to each other, a theory put forward by famous scientist Albert Einstein, who called it `spooky action at a distance'.

Having confirmed its existence, scientists today are learning how to use this `spooky action' as a helpful tool.

Washington, April 28 : The UN Millennium Development Goal of reducing the under-five child mortality rate by two-thirds by 2015 could still leave the children of the poor worse off.

According to Daniel Reidpath (Centre for Public Health Research, Brunel University, Uxbridge, UK) and colleagues, while this goal is laudable, the problem arises because the child mortality goal (Millennium Development Goal 4) is presented in terms of the raw, average under-five mortality for a country.

Washington, Apr 28 : Smoking, high blood pressure and being overweight—these are the top three preventable risk factors for premature mortality in the United States, according to a new study.

Led by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), the collaborative study found that smoking is responsible for 467,000 premature deaths each year, high blood pressure for 395,000, and being overweight for 216,000.

The effects of smoking work out to be about one in five deaths in American adults, while high blood pressure is responsible for one in six deaths.
