Washington, Apr 22 : US Senator John Kerry has said that the Obama Administration’s plan for Pakistan “is not a real strategy.”

“Pakistan is in a moment of peril. And I believe there is not in place yet an adequate policy or plan to deal with it,” Kerry, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said.

Kerry advised the Obama Administration to stop using the term “Af-Pak”, to describe a unified strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, because “I think it does a disservice to both countries and to the policy.”

Washington, Apr 22 : The Obama Administration wants to pursue broader military ties with Pakistan in order to help Islamabad combat a growing threat from militant groups including the Taliban, a senior Pentagon official has said.

US Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Michele Flournoy said Washington wants to provide the Pakistani Army with training and advice on counterinsurgency tactics developed in Iraq and Afghanistan and support ongoing operations with intelligence and other assistance.

Washington, April 22 : Researchers at Dartmouth University, US, have determined that the presence of the rare element osmium is on the rise globally.

They trace this increase to the consumption of refined platinum, the primary ingredient in catalytic converters, the equipment commonly installed in cars to reduce smog.

A volatile form of osmium is generated during platinum refinement and also during the normal operation of cars, and it gets dispersed globally through the atmosphere.

While osmium is found naturally, the researchers were surprised to discover that most of the osmium in rain and snow, and in the surface waters of rivers and oceans, is produced during the refining of platinum.
