WACA curator promises lively pitch for first Test

WACA LogoPerth, Dec. 15 : WACA Ground curator Cameron Sutherland has pledged to create a pitch with far more life than the one encountered in Perth last January.

"It has a lot more life in it at the moment, a lot greener surface at the moment," said Sutherland said of the wicket today.

"Last year we had a Twenty20 final (right before the Test) ... and we were worried about damage to it so we actually got the Test wicket reasonably hard on the Sunday night and it was a longer preparation.

Dokic begins wild card quest with a win

Jelena DokicMelbourne - Jelena Dokic on Monday began the quest for an Australian Open wild card with an opening victory in the playoff event for the Grand Slam entry spot.

Dokic defeated teenager Sophie Letcher 6-3 6-0 as a long-awaited comeback looks like getting serious for former world number four Dokic.

Dokic, 25 and ranked 179, has still made only the first step during this week's competition at Melbourne Park for hopefuls seeking a place at the Grand Slam from next January 19.

The winner, a teenaged Wimbledon semi-finalist, credited her renewed fitness with seeing her through on a chilly spring day.

Chris Hoy named BBC Sports Personality of the Year

London, Dec. 15: Triple Olympic champion Chris Hoy delivered one of the shocks of the sporting year on Sunday night when he overcame Lewis Hamilton and Rebecca Adlington to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Hoy''s remarkable achievement in collecting three sprint titles in China made him Britain''s most successful Olympian in a century, but the Scot was only third-favourite to win on Sunday night, reports The Telegraph.

Krejza could play at Perth, overlooking history

Sydney, Dec 15 : Australian vice-captain Michael Clarke has reinforced the worth of a spinner in Perth, despite the WACA's reputation as a spin bowler's graveyard.

Clarke insisted, though, that the decision on whether to play Jason Krejza instead of a fourth paceman would not be coloured by the result of last January's Perth Test, in which the home team fielded four quicks only for India to win by 72 runs, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

History has not been kind to spinners in Perth, where Indian legend Bishan Bedi is the only slow bowler to have claimed 10 wickets in a match, and the great Shane Warne did not gather more than six victims in a Test.
