Western, Arab nations hammer out compromise ceasefire textNew York  - The United Nations Security Council called for an emergency meeting late Thursday after Western and Arab nations arrived at a compromise text to end the Israel-Hamas fighting.

The text was hammered out following day-long negotiations at UN headquarters in New York between foreign ministers of the United States, France and Britain on one side and high-ranking Arab government officials and the Arab League on the other.

US condemns rocket attacks from Lebanon into Israel Washington - The United States condemned the rocket attacks from Lebanon into Israel that took place early Thursday morning and urged both sides to refrain from any steps that would escalate the conflict.

US State Department deputy spokesman Robert Wood said the attacks violated a United Nations Security Council resolution. The Lebanese government quickly condemned the attacks.

No one has claimed responsibility for the three rockets that were fired into Israel and slightly injured two people in the coastal city of Nahariya.

Delegation including Iran, Syria and Indonesia visits Lebanon Beirut  - A delegation of the Asian Parliamentary Troika arrived in Beirut late Thursday to discuss with Lebanon's House Speaker Nabih Berri developments in the Gaza Strip.

The delegation included Iranian House Speaker Ali Larijani, Speaker of the Syrian People's Assembly Mahmoud Al-Abrach and Indonesian Speaker Agung Laksono.

The delegation was also to hold talks with President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Fouad Seniora on Friday.

UAE minister pledges to rebuild UN Gaza schools hit by Israel Abu Dhabi - Deputy Prime Minister and the Chairman of the United Arab Emirates Red Crescent Authority pledged Thursday to reconstruct the United Nation schools in Gaza bombed by Israel.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al-Nahayyan said that reconstruction includes the school run by the UN's agency for Palestinian refugees (UNWRA), the al-Fakhoura school in the Jabaliya refugee camp, north of Gaza City.

The school was shelled by Israel last Tuesday leaving at least 46 Palestinian civilians dead and 150 injured, mostly children.

In a second incident later in the day another UN convoy with international staff, heading from Gaza City to the southern town of Rafah, also came under fire, and one more person was injured.

The deaths brought to four the number of UN relief workers killed in the Israel-Hamas conflict, which entered a 13th day on Thursday.
