Sonia sympathises with Mumbai attacks victims, cancels b''day celebrations

Sonia GandhiNew Delhi, Dec 9 : Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who turned 62 today, is not celebrating her birthday as a mark of tribute to the victims of Mumbai terror attacks.

Home Minister P Chidambaram and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi were among the first who met her and wished her.

Last week, the party had said that Sonia Gandhi would not celebrate her birthday, and asked workers not to visit her.

Party workers, who visited their president''s residence to greet her, celebrated the ocassion silently.

Muslims offer Eid-ul-Adha prayers

EidKalyan (Mumbai)/New Delhi/Srinagar, Dec 9 : Muslims all over India celebrated Eid-ul-Adha on Tuesday that marks the end of pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

Popularly known as Baqr-e-Eid, the festival is celebrated on the tenth day of Zil-Haji, the last month of the year according to the Islamic calendar.

Muslims in Kalyan city of Maharashtra gathered at mosques early in the morning and offered prayers.

"We have celebrated it peacefully. Though every year, it is done the same way just that the sacrifice made is part of the celebration of the festival," said Javed Ahmed, a devotee.
