NHRC terms manual scavenging as one of the worst violators of human rights

National Human Rights CommissionNew Delhi Aug. 29 : The National Human Rights Commission has termed manual scavenging as one of the worst violation of human rights.

At a National Workshop on “Manual Scavenging and Sanitation”, organized in New Delhi on Thursday, the Commission called for all out efforts to do away with this degrading practice.

It said the extended deadline to eradicate manual scavenging which had been shifted from December 2007 to March 2009, at no cost should be further extended and the country should become manual scavenging free.

Shahi Imam Bukhari addresses the people on terrorism

Briefing the people about the ongoing terrorist attacks he accused the Government and intelligence agencies of being biased in their investigations and alleged that Muslims were being arrested without any proof.

Referring to the apex court''s judgement on the issue of Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) he demanded for setting up of a judicial commission comprising of retired Hindu and Muslim judges to ascertain whether people arrested are actually involved.

Asian rights body claims that over 50 killed in Orissa

OrissaNew Delhi, Aug. 29 : The Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) today claimed that over 50 persons, mainly Christians, have been killed since the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists launched an attack on Christians last week.

It said that the deaths followed the murder of four of VHP members, including 90-year-old Laxmananda Saraswati by unidentified gunmen on August 23, 2008.

Central assistance for raising commando units to fight Naxals

COBRA force to combat Maoist menaceNew Delhi, August 29 : The Government of India has decided to provide assistance to raise ten CoBRA Battalions (Commando Battalions for Resolute Action) in the Central Reserve Police Force to combat the growing Left-wing extremism in the country.

Each of these Battalions will have 1057 personnel. And in next three years, more than 10,000 strong force of Commandos will be available. For effective and immediate response, these Battalions will be located in the main theatres of action in the affected States.

PETA activists protest animal deaths in the national capitalNew Delhi, Aug. 29 : Activists of People for Ethical Treatment of Animal (PETA) staged a protest outside Central Zoo Authority (CZA) in the Capital on Thursday.

There were just two members representing PETA, who wanted to draw attention and express fury at the recent incidents in which a leopard died in the zoo and two bears were killed by poachers for their bile inside the Rangapahar wildlife sanctuary in Nagaland.
