Tibetan monks and nuns in exile in India stage protest against ChinaDharamsala, Aug 11 : Continuing with their agitation against China, Tibetan nuns and monks here staged a protest today.

Around 30 nuns and monks from the Dhomalin nunnery sat in silent protest against Chinese atrocities inside Tibet.

The protesters said they were not against Olympics as generally believed but were protesting against the human rights violation by the host country, inside Tibet.

The lecture on "Demands of Social Justice" will be presided over by Vice President Hamid Ansari, while Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will be the chief guest.

The lecture is expected to be attended by several dignitaries and guests.

A portrait of Mukherjee will also be unveiled on the occasion.

Freedom fighters felicitated ahead of Independence Day

Freedom Fighters of IndiaNew Delhi, Aug 10: President Pratibha Patil felicitated the country's freedom fighters here late last evening.

The occasion was the 66th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, a deciding phase in India's freedom struggle that finally led to the independence from British rule.

Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh were also present on the occasion.

Freedom fighters, however, expressed contrasting views on the country's progress since independence.

Japanese baby born to Indian surrogate mother gets birth document

Japanese-babyNew Delhi  - Indian authorities have issued a birth certificate to a Japanese baby born to an Indian surrogate mother, easing the way for her Japanese father to take her home, news reports said Saturday.

The certificate was issued by the municipal authorities in Anand town of western Gujarat state, where 16-day-old Manji was born, in the name of her father biological Ikufumi Yamada, IANS news agency reported.

Manji, who was shifted to a hospital in another Indian town, Jaipur, days after she was born, is at the centre of a legal wrangle as India does not have any surrogacy laws.
